Pope Francis passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy that many outside the Catholic Church don’t realize. We look at a tribute by John Nichols from The Nation which helps shed a light on how the departed pontiff fought to make the world better for those who are marginalized by capitalism. Then, we review how Governor Tony Evers’ memo to Wisconsin State agencies and facilities on how to deal with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents caused a stir, despite it being fairly standard advice on how to keep your rights intact in the face of overzealous enforcement. Finally, we examine how the tide has shifted in the Democratic Party, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seems well positioned to ride it into leadership of the Party. This week, Congress voted on whether or not to fast track a bill that would hand the Treasury Department the ability to strip any nonprofit of its 501 (c)(3) status by declaring it a “terrorist” supporting organization. This was set to fly trough easily UNTIL Trump got elected and enough Democrats and even one Republican said it was unwise to hand him that power. Don’t breathe too easily, though – this bill can return next year, and wonderful nonprofits like Common Defense and Task Force Butler, who just joined forces to stop fascism’s rise in America, could find themselves decimated by it.

Finally, we briefly tell you about how scientists are closer to finding the key to how life began, by replicating simplified mitochondria in lab conditions. All this and more on TMI for Friday, November 15, 2024 – listen in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went to Washington hot to make change in a place devoted to preserving the capitalist status quo, often at the expense of everyone not rich enough to buy congressional influence. We look at how the combination of her rebuke from the powers that be and the fickleness of the more particular forces she wanted to represent pushed her away from continuing to fight for the ideals of the Green New Deal, even as it took flight internationally.
Then, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is famous for fighting for First Amendment protected political speech… so long as you’re wealthy enough to pay for it. That means that Big Oil has been quite successful in twisting that firm’s speciality into a weapon against environmental protest.
