The Meaning of Our Communication

The meaning of a communication is not what you intend it to be – it is what those who receive that communication take away from it.  This is a difficult truth to wrangle with, and it is vital to understand before committing an international action.

For example, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1942, they were not attacking our military on our soil; they put no boots on the ground; it was a surgical strike, with no intention to harm the general citizenry of Hawaii. However, it was *the* action that galvanized us here in America to join ALL theaters of World War II, not merely against the Japanese.  Did they intend to rile us to rise against their Axis allies?  I can only imagine Hirohito got some heated “Gee, THANKS moron!” messages from Hitler and Mussolini for that.

My point is simple: we may see a serious need to perform a surgical strike, without putting boots on the ground, that in no way shape or form attacks Russia, Iran or anyone BUT the Assad regime, and thus we can try to fool ourselves into saying we are not getting into a war… but what will everyone else take away from that?

TMI 8/31/2013: Save the TRC, Speak Without Permits, and More!

The final day of August 2013 has us joined live in-studio by Brenda Konkel, Director of the Tenant Resource Center, who warns us that this valuable resource is about to have its budget hacked to smithereens – she helps us understand what the TRC does and why this is a truly cruel cut to lay at the feet of Madison and Dane County.

Save the Tenant Resource Center!

Then, we’re fortunate enough to have in-studio Karen Vieth, blogger at Running Reflections, who will give us an update on the escalations of the actions of the Capitol Police at the Solidarity Sing Along – with the violent arrest of the Terrell brothers there, it seems to be truly out of hand, but Karen’s message is to speak out despite the violence or lack of permit.

TMI 8/10/2013: The Devil’s Advocates Come Calling, and More!

One of the things I recommend to anyone who says the Common Media doesn’t serve us is to BE the media. Joining us on TMI are Mike Crute and Dom Salvia, who together decided to do just that. Starting in early 2012, they went on the air at The Mic 92.1FM (WXXM Madison) with The Devil’s Advocates Radio Show, a program that consists of a continuous intermingling of Progressive and Libertarian ideas, concepts and experiences from its differing hosts. By showing us that discussion, however frustrating it can be at times, can still be had by thoughtful people, they show us that if we devote ourselves to keeping the conversation going, we can reap great rewards. Recently, they both have personally experienced what it means to have your ability to safely petition your government for redress taken away, and that our current Governor is not interested in allowing a conversation.  Also, we’ve had Rep Alan Grayson on recently about his “Mind Your Own Business Act”, and perhaps pressure from progressives like him and the public brouhaha over the NSA leaks of Edward Snowden have inspired President Obama to order all intelligence agencies to disclose as much of their domestic spying programs as they can. I’d call that a win for Snowden – all that and more happened Saturday, August 10th at Noon Central  – catch the podcast!

TMI 7/20/2013: Gen. Petraeus’ Fracking Connections, ERM and More!

Did you know that refining tar sands actually cleans the air? Glad you said “no”, because it doesn’t, but Environmental Resources Management, who conducted the Keystone XL environmental impact statement wants you to think so! And this is the contractor group the Obama Administration is replying on to say if the Keystone XL pipeline is safe? Steve Horn joined us to discuss his piece on that as well as on how General David Petraeus has a seminar coming to CUNY this fall that uses loads of industry-spun data on fracking. Then, Al Suarez joined us to discuss the Edward Snowden Venezuela connections. All that and much more happened. Check out the podcasts below and get The Cure for the Common Media!

TMI 7/13/2013: WLHA Special Weekend w/ Kevin Peckham

WSUM 91.7FM in Madison, which TMI proudly broadcasts from every week, was not the first radio station here at UW-Madison. That honor falls to WLHA, which back in the day broadcast on 640AM from the Lakeshore Hall basement, and this weekend WSUM is being taken over by WLHA Alumni. In the case of TMI, we will be joined by Kevin Peckham, and we’ll discuss the FCC’s recent release of 1000 low-power FM frequencies for public use, and how that will enrich our airwaves similarly to how community based radio has from the day of WLHA to nowadays with WORT, WSUM and others! All that and more on TMI Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Noon Central on 91.7 WSUM FM in Madison, and live via any of the streaming apps and sources on the TMI Listen page (http://tmitmitmi.com/listen/). TMI 6/22/2013: NSA, TPP and Other Hazardous Acronyms with Rep. Alan Grayson

Never since the choking hazard posed by a dry bowl of Alpha-Bits Cereal have seemingly-random mixes of letters been so dangerous to the well-being of Americans and others worldwide. We are joined by Alan Grayson, Democratic Representative of Florida’s Ninth Congressional District, to discuss how the NSA has been minding everyone’s Ps and Qs (and every other letter we type into texts and online) and how he is telling them to Mind Your Own Business. While our privacy is being violated, the government is insisting on secrecy surrounding the details surrounding the Trade Treachery of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) – but Rep. Grayson has seen it, and discusses its perils as much as he’s allowed to (without killing us). All that and more, without needing to buy a vowel – listen to the Cure for the Common Media, below!

TMI 6/15/2013: Opposite States of America

We’ve fallen completely down the rabbit hole: Silent protests are being silenced, Keystone XL activists are being targeted as terrorists, and government snooping is being run by corporations.

First, we’re joined by Wendi, one of the many Wisconsin citizens who sat in the gallery of the state legislature with tape over their mouths as a show of protest over having had their opposition to a trio of horribly anti-women bills silenced. You won’t believe what happened then! Click and listen:

Then, we are joined by Steve Horn, investigative reporter for DeSmogBlog.com, who exposes not only the fracking involvement of Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, but also how federal agencies and private corporations have teamed up to brand peaceful Keystone XL pipeline activists as terrorists. Click and listen:

Finally – no matter what you think of Edward Snowden, the picture he’s illuminated is not one of Government-as-Big-Brother. It’s one of Government as the handmaiden to the corporations who are gathering our private data involuntarily and using it for their own profit.

All that and more was on TMI 6/15/2013 at Noon Central on WSUM 91.7FM in Madison, and live via any of the streaming apps and sources on the TMI Listen page. Be sure always to tune into what’s really going on!
