ALEC Big Oil Episode Gubernatorial Politics Mary Jo Walters WSUM

TMI 8/02/2014 – ALEC’s Cookin’ with Gas (w/ Steve Horn), Mary Jo’s Campaigning for Local Control and More!

Are you a natural gas corporation, unhappy with the rapid pace of hydraulic fracturing development under the current administration (you want even more)? Then do what Cheniere did: join the ranks of corporate bill-mill ALEC, and have them write model legislation that will pave the way for you. Steve Horn returns to shed light on this and more!

Then: returning to TMI in the middle of her campaign for Lt. Governor, Mary Jo Walters joins us from the midst of a multi-day bike ride across Wisconsin to promote the idea that maybe, instead of electing people who will allow big moneyed interests to take control of local resources away from the communities near them, we should consider focusing our elected officials’ attention on maintaining the integrity of local control.

Electoral Politics Episode Populism Progressive Policy WSUM

TMI 6/21/2014 – The Wedge that Keeps Populism Divided, and much more!

There could be a vibrant populist movement in the United States of America. Any time a government-for-the-People progressive candidate gets through the myriad political traps laid down by the status-quo parties, they find a large amount of support from the citizenry. Libertarian-minded candidates also find plenty of popular support thanks to their individual-rights stances. Even the Tea Party only fared as well as they did because they dressed themselves up in populist rhetoric.

So why isn’t there a broad coalition of people-power politicos making waves? I believe I’ve identified the wedge, the issue that keeps us from doing this, and I’ll go over it live on the air, and much more at noon Central on WSUM FM, 91.7 in Madison and http://wsum.org/ everywhere! Barbara Crabb Devin Gatton Episode KeystoneXL LGBTQ+ Log Cabin Republicans Same Sex Marriage Steve Horn Terrorism WSUM

TMI 6/07/2014 – The Wave of Equality with Devin Gatton, the Mistaken Surveillance with Steve Horn and More!

U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb in Madison on Friday overturned Wisconsin’s same-sex marriage ban, striking down an amendment to the state constitution approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2006 and prompting an emergency action by the state to halt the scores of weddings that began in the state’s two largest cities. Devin Gatton of Wisconsin’s Log Cabin Republicans joins us to discuss and show that there are things we can agree just need to happen, no matter our affiliation.

Then, Steve Horn returns to discuss how the government has been keeping anti-Keystone XL activists under close watch as suspected “terrorists”, while a military commander warns us that the threat real terrorists pose to our oil pipelines is going mostly ignored. Steve has also just concluded a three part investigation into Retired General David Petraeus’ dealings with North Dakota, forcing a public official to admit that obviously corrupt practices were just “business as usual”.

Banks Episode Inspector General Justice Department Medical Marijuana Obama Administration WSUM

TMI 5/31/2014 – Are Banks Too Big to Sue, Mary Jane’s Day in Congress and More!

The Inspector General’s Office issued a report in March  that showed the failure of the Justice Department to treat prosecuting those responsible for the massive mortgage fraud as any real priority. Banks misbehaving may not shock you, but a recent report on how those who are supposed to investigate and prosecute these crimes are instead PROTECTING the banks might get your attention.

Then, you may be aware that, under the Obama Administration, the Justice Department has found plenty of time and resources to go after places that are, under local and state laws, legally dispensing medical marijuana. Well, time they may have, but the resources might be about to dry up. In a virtually unheard-of move for this do-nothing Congress, the House this week voted to protect medical marijuana. We’ll detail how. That and much more on TMI for Saturday, May 31, 2014, airing live on WSUM FM, 91.7 in Madison and http://wsum.org/ everywhere.  Tune in for your Cure for the Common Media!

CODEPINK Drone Assassinations Ed Gillespie Episode Lee Fang Lobbying Medea Benjamin WSUM

TMI 5/17/2014 – CODEPINK’s Medea Benjamin on Drone Politics, Ed Gillespie’s Unregistered Acts and Much More!

David Barron, one of the chief architects behind the convolutions needed to make drone assassinations seem remotely legal, is being given his just desserts for his murderous actions: he’s being promoted! Disputing the “justice” of it all, Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK wrote a great overview of the history behind this act of twisted inhumanity, and I’m happy to welcome her to TMI at Noon to discuss it and more!

Then, if you think that the requirement that lobbyists be registered is helping with transparency in government, then you haven’t talked to Ed Gillespie recently. He, like many lobbyists, dropped off the rolls of registered influence peddlers… but that didn’t stop him. As reported by Lee Fang, he’s running to be a Senator even though he’s never stopped manipulating Congress for the benefit of the corporate elite. Why should we think he’ll stop if elected?

DeSmogBlog’s Research Fellow Steve Horn has been busy as ever reporting on how TransCanada’s Keystone XL is flowing – in the southern end, how Enbridge has more tar sands bitumen pipelines ready to go, and how “Bomb Trains” – that is, trains that carry oil in easily combustible tanker cars – are rolling through many cities near you, including Milwaukee! Think they aren’t that big a deal? Ask the residents of Lynchburg, Virginia, where one caught fire and spilled its flaming contents into the James River!

Doug Cunningham Episode International Workers' Day Loyalty Day Socialism Taking Back Socialism Workers Independent News WSUM

TMI 5/03/2014: Doug Cunningham’s Loyalty to Labor, the Many Flavors of Socialism, and much more!

This Thursday, May 1st, has been celebrated since the 1890’s as “International Workers’ Day”, but this year, President Obama came out to celebrate “Loyalty Day” on the first of May, a holiday designation meant to replace a recognition of all that workers do for society with a celebration of “the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom”. To discuss this and many other labor-related issues, I invited the man I know who is most loyal to the labor movement, Doug Cunningham of Workers Independent News, to join us and discuss where we are, where we are going, and how celebrating workers is possibly the best way to recognize the heritage of American freedom.

Then, you may agree with Socialism and not even be aware of it. How? Well, for one thing, Socialism isn’t one big monolithic concept – it has many flavors and variations, some of which disagree strongly with the rest. To help illustrate the different types of Socialism, we’ll be joined by the admins of “Taking Back Socialism”, a lively Facebook page devoted to promoting education and discussion about Socialist causes.

Big Ag Episode GMOs Monsanto Pension Reform Pensions Raven Albrecht Ravenworks Steampunk WSUM

TMI 4/26/2014: How to Succeed with Steampunk and the Wild West, How to Fail with GMOs, and much more!

On TMI, we like to feature the success of good people, and not just the dire things we need to be mindful of. Raven Albrecht is one of the good ones. She started Ravenworks as a web-based business, opening her first brick-and-mortar store in early 2008. Most retail businesses that took that step that year are now gone, but Raven found her special mix of holding community events and continually finding ways to interact with her clientele in store and out allowed Ravenworks to not only survive but thrive! We’ll talk with her about that, and preview the upcoming Stonefield Wild West Steampunk event.

Then: thanks to the nature of GMO foods, there can be no solid basis to say if the practice is good or bad at its core. However, we can safely say that the way giant agricultural corporations like Monsanto are using GMO tech is good for virtually nothing but their profits. We’ll look at how GMO foods are not only being designed for commercial value first and nutritional value second, but how they are allowing these corporations to own the world’s food supply.

Finally, imagine that you’ve worked a steady job for decades, and that instead of getting paid more during that time, you deferred some of that into a pension fund so you would have money when you retire – money you earned. Lately, more and more pressure has been put by big corporations on public employers (cities, states, etc) to raid those pension funds to pay for completely unrelated expenses. While you might look to the judiciary to be unbiased in these cases, big players like Exxon/Mobil, Google and the Koch Brothers are inviting judges, all-expenses-paid, to a conference on how to “reform” these pensions to the benefit of their interests, not the interests of the workers. Weirdly, the secretive way these pensions are written may allow just that.
