TMI 02/19/2021 – Fossil Fuels’ Failure in the TX Freeze, Cities Underreport Carbon Footprints, NYC Surveillance, Diagnosing You Under Your Skin

When Texas suffered catastrophic freezing, cutting power to much of the state, right wing media (followed all-too-predictably by mainstream sources) blamed the wind turbines that had locked up in the cold as being the reason why people were suffering and dying. But wind turbines function in much harsher cold than Texas offered just fine, pointing to a problem in cheaping out on their maintenance, and deeper infrastructural issues in the fossil fuel pumps that failed in much greater abundance there.

Then, we discuss how many cities throughout the USA are, intentionally or not, notably underreporting the impact they are having on the environment, and what needs to happen to correct this. Also, we touch on the overwhelming surveillance apparatus that the most populous city in America has built – is it worth it? Finally, we tell you about new medical techniques that are being developed to use the layer just under your skin to diagnose you with potentially greater accuracy and with far less invasiveness than current practices. Native American tribes have been brutalized, subjugated, cheated and mistreated by the Federal Government of the United States since the very beginning. With the nomination of Rep. Deb Haaland (D – NM), an enrolled member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, to the office of Secretary of the Interior things could be looking up for tribal peoples of USA, and looking dicey for their latest abuser, Big Oil. We discuss.

Then, we explore how it is that agricultural states like Wisconsin used to be reliably Democratic in their voting patterns, but have since found their rural areas turning solidly Republican – and what the Democratic Party has the unique opportunity to do RIGHT NOW to get them back into the fold.

Next, we examine new evidence that shows that the DC National Guard was withheld from protecting the Capitol Building on January 6th from the highest levels, DAYS in advance of the event! TMI 02/14/2015 – A Few Facts, A Small Tribe Beats Big Oil, Defamation Not Allowed in the Climate Change Debate

For the past 30+ years, we’ve been told that economics are simply common sense, which had a deleterious effect on how much attention we paid to facts that might contradict the sensible-sounding slogans of “Wage hikes cause unemployment. Unions are job killers. Companies are job creators. Tax breaks for the few trickle down to the many as wages. Inequality works, or rather it makes people work harder.” However, we’ll discuss how, if we pay attention to the facts, we might just discover that reliance on  “common sense” can be used to sell lies and bilk most of us out of our own ability to thrive.

Also, there’s a tribe out there that actually has brought Big Oil to a standstill on the lands they hold, and in Canada, the courts have said that you can debate climate change all you like, but you cannot make scientists who work hard and have no notable flaws to their methods or their research seem incompetent or deceitful.  All that and more on TMI for Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, 2015, airing live on WSUM 91.7FM in Madison or http://wsum.org/ the world over! Embridge has a Keystone XL clone; you’ve known that for over a year now, if you’ve been listening to TMI. Pipeline 61 is a leg of it, running right though Dane County, and Embridge wants to triple the load of tar sands bitumen pushed through it. For Dane County Supervisor Patrick Miles, it’s a bit too much of a risk, considering that Dane County has a pumping station for it, so at the next Dane County Supervisory Board meeting, they will be discussing what regulations should be imposed on that facility. Embridge is, of course, upset. Patrick Miles joins us today to discuss the situation.

Usually, I prefer a relaxed attitude about things: no jacket required, open mic nights, etc. In the case of big oil, however, I make an exception: they want to bring Alberta tar sands bitumen to market, no Keystone XL required… and it looks like they’ve managed it. Steve Horn joins us to discuss how this came to be while we were focused on KXL.

Then, have you heard of “Personhood”? It’s the concept that a fertilized egg has the same rights as a full human being. It comes up every few years, but this time it’s been reframed in an insidious new way that tricked former opponents into backing it. Karen Middleton, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado, joins us to help sort it out and pin down where in America is facing this new threat to women’s rights.

He joins us by phone to go over what’s been going on while we were enjoying the halcyon days.

A study he coauthored had found that the Polar Vortex phenomenon that plagued is here in the U.S. last year may become the new normal, thanks to how arctic sea ice has been steadily disappearing.
