Episode Ferguson, MO Gun Culture Jack Russell Weinstein Michael Brown Open Carry Police Militarization Second Amendment Stand Your Ground WSUM

TMI 08/23/2014 – Jack Russell Weinstein on Open Carry, Police Outfitted as Soldiers in a War on Whom? and much more!

Jack Russell Weinstein, Professor at University of North Dakota and host of the Why? radio program, authored a blog post this summer that set many folks on both sides of the gun ownership debate abuzz, called, “How Should People Respond to Open-Carry Gun-Rights Activists?” He joins us on TMI to discuss this, and what exactly is driving the great divide in gun culture here in America. To that end, are laws like Stand Your Ground and movements like Open Carry rationale for the marked increase in the militarization of our police officers? As seen not only in Michael Brown case in Ferguson, Missouri, more and more police and sheriff departments are becoming equipped not like the officers of the peace we need them to be, but as soldiers fighting a war – but who is the enemy? Us?

We’ll explore all that and much more on TMI for Saturday, August 23, 2014, airing live at noon Central on WSUM FM 91.7 and http://wsum.org/ – tune in for your Cure for the Common Media!

Brian Elvert Climate Action 350 UW Episode GMOs Neil de Grasse Tyson People's Climate March WSUM

TMI 08/16/2014 – Stepping Up: The Peoples Climate March with Brian Elvert, Neil de Grasse Tyson’s GMO Conundrum, and much more!

Brian Elvert, member of Climate Action 350 UW, knows a thing or two about getting the attention of those in power when it comes to climate change… and he also knows that those who are truly in power are the People, when they awaken to an issue. Towards that end, he joins us to discuss the People’s Climate March, happening in New York City on September 21st – barely a month away! They will be there the same time as heads of state will arrive for an historic climate summit. He’ll give us all the details.

Then, Neil de Grasse Tyson, a brilliant communicator of scientific knowledge, has stepped into a firestorm with his recent comments on GMOs. The star of Cosmos wants it said that there isn’t any real difference between selective breeding changing the genetic structure of organisms for humanity’s benefit and using modern genetic modification to splice together new genetic structures in organisms. There’s a technical correctness and a large problem to what he is saying, and we’ll go over that, and much more on TMI for Saturday the 16th of August 2012, airing live at noon Central on WSUM FM 91.7 and http://wsum.org/ – tune in for your Cure for the Common Media.

Access Journalism Brett Hulsey Episode Jeremy Ryan Mary Burke Media Paul Ryan WSUM

TMI 08/09/2014 – Of Primary Concern: Which Ryan is Right for You, The Hulsey Question of Dem Principles, and Has Access Journalism Stifled Political Press?

On this episode of TMI, we focus on principles and core values, and those who challenge us to live up to them. Up first, we have Jeremy Ryan of http://therightryan.com/ – he challenges Republican Rep. Paul Ryan in Tuesday’s (August 12) primary, asking why it seems so hard for Paul Ryan and much of the GOP to live up to their states principles, such as, “The proper function of government is to do for the people those things that have to be done but cannot be done, or cannot be done as well, by individuals, and that the most effective government is government closest to the people.” We’ll dig into that and more.

We’ll talk to Wisconsin State Senator Brett Hulsey, who is running in Tuesday’s Primary against Mary Burke, noting that she lacks in many ways when compared to his standards of restoring the money the Walker administration took from Wisconsin’s school system, workforce and public healthcare programs, and his stance on keeping jobs in Wisconsin (as well as bringing more in). Just as Jeremy Ryan is challenging the former VP candidate Paul Ryan to be a real Republican, State Senator Brett Hulsey is challenging Mary Burke to be a real Democrat.

Finally, we’ll look at the state of the media when it comes to political press coverage. A nasty little practice, dubbed “Access Journalism” by those who oppose it, has arisen to become the new normal: if you’re a member of the media that isn’t liked, you get little to no access to those who hold public office or make the decisions that affect us all. We’ll explore how this works, and what can be done about it.

All that and more gets covered on TMI for Saturday, August 9th, 2014, airing live at Noon Central on WSUM FM 91.7 or http://wsum.org/ anywhere in the world. Tune in and get your Cure for the Common Media!

Are you a natural gas corporation, unhappy with the rapid pace of hydraulic fracturing development under the current administration (you want even more)? Then do what Cheniere did: join the ranks of corporate bill-mill ALEC, and have them write model legislation that will pave the way for you. Steve Horn returns to shed light on this and more!

Then: returning to TMI in the middle of her campaign for Lt. Governor, Mary Jo Walters joins us from the midst of a multi-day bike ride across Wisconsin to promote the idea that maybe, instead of electing people who will allow big moneyed interests to take control of local resources away from the communities near them, we should consider focusing our elected officials’ attention on maintaining the integrity of local control.

Electoral Politics Episode Populism Progressive Policy WSUM

TMI 6/21/2014 – The Wedge that Keeps Populism Divided, and much more!

There could be a vibrant populist movement in the United States of America. Any time a government-for-the-People progressive candidate gets through the myriad political traps laid down by the status-quo parties, they find a large amount of support from the citizenry. Libertarian-minded candidates also find plenty of popular support thanks to their individual-rights stances. Even the Tea Party only fared as well as they did because they dressed themselves up in populist rhetoric.

So why isn’t there a broad coalition of people-power politicos making waves? I believe I’ve identified the wedge, the issue that keeps us from doing this, and I’ll go over it live on the air, and much more at noon Central on WSUM FM, 91.7 in Madison and http://wsum.org/ everywhere! TMI 6/07/2014 – The Wave of Equality with Devin Gatton, the Mistaken Surveillance with Steve Horn and More!

U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb in Madison on Friday overturned Wisconsin’s same-sex marriage ban, striking down an amendment to the state constitution approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2006 and prompting an emergency action by the state to halt the scores of weddings that began in the state’s two largest cities. Devin Gatton of Wisconsin’s Log Cabin Republicans joins us to discuss and show that there are things we can agree just need to happen, no matter our affiliation.

Then, Steve Horn returns to discuss how the government has been keeping anti-Keystone XL activists under close watch as suspected “terrorists”, while a military commander warns us that the threat real terrorists pose to our oil pipelines is going mostly ignored. Steve has also just concluded a three part investigation into Retired General David Petraeus’ dealings with North Dakota, forcing a public official to admit that obviously corrupt practices were just “business as usual”.

Banks Episode Inspector General Justice Department Medical Marijuana Obama Administration WSUM

TMI 5/31/2014 – Are Banks Too Big to Sue, Mary Jane’s Day in Congress and More!

The Inspector General’s Office issued a report in March  that showed the failure of the Justice Department to treat prosecuting those responsible for the massive mortgage fraud as any real priority. Banks misbehaving may not shock you, but a recent report on how those who are supposed to investigate and prosecute these crimes are instead PROTECTING the banks might get your attention.

Then, you may be aware that, under the Obama Administration, the Justice Department has found plenty of time and resources to go after places that are, under local and state laws, legally dispensing medical marijuana. Well, time they may have, but the resources might be about to dry up. In a virtually unheard-of move for this do-nothing Congress, the House this week voted to protect medical marijuana. We’ll detail how. That and much more on TMI for Saturday, May 31, 2014, airing live on WSUM FM, 91.7 in Madison and http://wsum.org/ everywhere.  Tune in for your Cure for the Common Media!

CODEPINK Drone Assassinations Ed Gillespie Episode Lee Fang Lobbying Medea Benjamin WSUM

TMI 5/17/2014 – CODEPINK’s Medea Benjamin on Drone Politics, Ed Gillespie’s Unregistered Acts and Much More!

David Barron, one of the chief architects behind the convolutions needed to make drone assassinations seem remotely legal, is being given his just desserts for his murderous actions: he’s being promoted! Disputing the “justice” of it all, Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK wrote a great overview of the history behind this act of twisted inhumanity, and I’m happy to welcome her to TMI at Noon to discuss it and more!

Then, if you think that the requirement that lobbyists be registered is helping with transparency in government, then you haven’t talked to Ed Gillespie recently. He, like many lobbyists, dropped off the rolls of registered influence peddlers… but that didn’t stop him. As reported by Lee Fang, he’s running to be a Senator even though he’s never stopped manipulating Congress for the benefit of the corporate elite. Why should we think he’ll stop if elected?
