TMI 05/07/2021 – How Madison Can Cross the “Finnish” Line with the Homeless, How White Male Supreme Court Clerks Make a Less Representational Justice System, and How The House of Reps Needs More Reps

Madison, like many cities, struggles with how to solve its homelessness problem. Especially in the brutal Wisconsin winters, we don’t want people to freeze to death, but we need to be able to afford the solution. Finland knows a thing or two about Winter AND about homelessness, and their solution: make giving the homeless housing the FIRST thing you do, not third or fourth step down the line. While not cheap, it is far more affordable than any other approach, and actually STOPS homelessness.

Next, we look at the hoops one has to jump through to be a Clerk at the Supreme Court of the United States. These obstacles are making it more difficult for women and minorities to achieve this goal, and thus making the high court Judges and Justices that are often chosen from these clerkships more white and male. Finally, with the 2020 Census fully tabulated, we have the decennial struggle for which states will lose or gain seats in the House – but no one should be losing any, given that there’s no Constitutional reason to have the number of Representatives frozen. TMI 04/30/2021 – The Discrimination of “Low Skill” Jobs, Nonwhite Millennials Suffer Greater Wealth Inequality, and How City-bought Housing Actually Solves Housing Crisis

If you knew your worth to your employer, you’d almost certainly not put up with the sliver of that worth that they pay you to work for them. One of the tricks used to keep you from demanding more for the hours of your life you spend laboring is to call MANY jobs “low skill”. We examine this falsehood that is meant to make you feel bad for wanting to have your needs met while making the boss rich.

Then, we look at the famous disparity of wealth between Millenials and past generations, and how, when sorted racially, that disparty gets much worse. Finally, we see that cities have found a solution to the housing crisis plaguing them: buy housing up and manage it for those in need! The Minneapolis Police Officer who murdered George Floyd, as captured on live video, (whose name I use as little as possible) faced a historic verdict as all three charges came down as Guilty. We examine just how unprecedented the verdict was and how that directly shows how deeply corrupted and harmful our current system of policing is.

Then, we investigate how, across the USA, BLM protestors were arrested without cause or evidence simply to create the false impression that the protests were unlawful and in need of such inhumane tactics as tear gas and rubber bullets. Then, we talk about Governor Evers’ budget for the State of Wisconsin which includes legalizing cannabis and reforming the troubled youth prison system. Finally we touch on the sad correlation between the ending of stay-at-home orders and the sudden return of mass shootings. TMI 03/26/2021 – Music Makers are Being Swept Downstream (full episode analysis)

Once upon a time in Melodia, one would dream of putting together a band, playing somewhere that would get you noticed by someone who would call up someone else to come see you play elsewhere, and suddenly you had a contract with a record label, a musical industry conglomerate who would promise you fame and fortune. Maybe something would come of the radio airplay you gained from it, or the tours you would go on, or your second or third album, but eventually you’d be known from London to Topeka, Tokyo to Sydney, or so the dream went. The labels were happy to sop up as much of that money as their deceptive contracts allowed them to, of course, and if you never got signed, you likely wound up working in an office somewhere while your guitar made friends with the spiders in the attic. Things often didn’t end up rosy.

Now, you don’t have to rely on the labels! You can make your music at home and stream it on Spotify, create a little YouTube video to go with it and get the ad revenue from the views – an exciting prospect to be sure. That is, until you find out how many thousands or even millions of times your music can be heard/seen without you seeing any notable income at all! When Texas suffered catastrophic freezing, cutting power to much of the state, right wing media (followed all-too-predictably by mainstream sources) blamed the wind turbines that had locked up in the cold as being the reason why people were suffering and dying. But wind turbines function in much harsher cold than Texas offered just fine, pointing to a problem in cheaping out on their maintenance, and deeper infrastructural issues in the fossil fuel pumps that failed in much greater abundance there.

Then, we discuss how many cities throughout the USA are, intentionally or not, notably underreporting the impact they are having on the environment, and what needs to happen to correct this. Also, we touch on the overwhelming surveillance apparatus that the most populous city in America has built – is it worth it? Finally, we tell you about new medical techniques that are being developed to use the layer just under your skin to diagnose you with potentially greater accuracy and with far less invasiveness than current practices.
