TMI 05/31/2024 – Joe Biden is Running Away From How He Fights Monopoly Power and That Could Cost Him Like it Did Feingold, The Real Carbon Footprint of EVs Versus Internal Combustion Cars and more

President Joe Biden’s administration has taken numerous steps to fight monopoly power in the interest of the people, but at almost every turn, the White House Communications team refuses to comment on these positions and accomplishments, making it look like Biden is doing nothing for we, the people. The distinguished progressive Senator Russ Feingold lost re-election in 2010 with a similar “run away from your progressive bona fides” strategy – it might cost Biden similarly.

Next, leave it to the ABC Network of Australia, but they’ve broken down the exact carbon footprint differences between EVs and Internal Combustion Engine cars from manufacturing and materials, fuel/energy sourcing and use through their lifetime and finally into disposal – you’ll be surprised at exactly how the two compare. TMI 03/08/2024 – WSJ Op-Ed Lies About Electric Cars Polluting Worse Than Gasoline-powered Cars, New Speed Record Broken in Glacial Fracturing in Antarctica, New Anthropocene Epoch Fails Vote and more

A recent Wall Street Journal op-ed falsely claims that electric cars pollute worse than their gasoline-powered counterparts, comparing incomparable metrics to come with their their supposed data. Meanwhile, amidst the frozen expanses of Antarctica, a chilling new speed record is set in glacial fracturing, highlighting the alarming pace of climate change. This harrowing event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action to address environmental degradation and preserve our planet’s delicate ecosystems.

Keeping focus on the realm of geology and human impact, we return to the ambitious effort to classify a new Anthropocene Epoch, only to find unexpected obstacles when the initiative faces a vote. Despite mounting evidence of humanity’s profound influence on Earth’s geological processes, the classification effort stalls, thanks to the complexities of scientific consensus. Then, Mike McCabe provides insight into the contrasting displays of courage exhibited by political figures like Mitch McConnell and Alexei Navalny, underscoring the moral imperatives within political leadership.

Finally, we wrap up with a fascinating historical discovery, uncovering a thousand-year-old astrolabe that reveals evidence of knowledge exchange between Muslim and Jewish scientists, offering a glimpse into the enduring legacy of intellectual collaboration across cultural boundaries. TMI 12/15/2023 – Is the Filter Bubble the Wrong Mechanism to Explain Social Media Toxicity?, How Trump’s Project 2025 is a Next Level Disaster for the Climate and more

We’ve reported here on TMI on Eli Pariser’s “Filter Bubble” concept since its debut in 2010 at his Ted talk: the idea that Google was selectively feeding results back to the user that the user agreed with, making it so that one person’s search results were often vastly different than another’s. Mr Pariser pointed out that by putting us all in these Filter Bubbles, we couldn’t agree on what was even factual. A new article published in the PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) journal, however, says that is all wrong when applied to social media giants like Facebook, where they aim to increase your focus and time spent there by enhancing the chance of you getting made angry by what you see. We examine these competing concepts.

Then, we go over how the media is gleefully playing up any and all minutiae of Trump’s intentions for his second term except for one key part: how the Project 2025 plan that he’s assimilated is catastrophic for any chance we have to keep the environment from completely collapsing.

Finally, we present an update to a story we went over a few weeks back, putting a spotlight on how the EV infrastructure promised by Biden’s funding in 2021 is FINALLY starting to come to fruition. TMI 04/29/2022 – Manchinema’s Differences Doom the Dem Senate, COVID Coordinator Dr. Jha May Not Be Best Pick, Science/Technology News-in-Brief: EV Pickups, Speaker Film and Meteor DNA

While supposedly-Democratic Senators Joe Machin and Kyrsten Sinema seem to be such a match made in Hell that they’ve been given the collective nickname “Manchinema”, we discuss how their differences actually spell even MORE trouble than what they have in common. Next, we look at Dr. Jha, the new COVID Coordinator for the Biden Administration and examine his record, noting that he has some major flaws in his history that makes his appointment seem… ill-advised. Finally, we give a quick looksee at new innovations in EV pickup trucks, thin film that can act as a speaker for your audio needs, and how DNA being lodged inside meteors may not be as rare as once thought. On today’s episode of TMI:

WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU?? Will you at LEAST get vaccinated if the State of Wisconsin PAYS you $100? If you don’t live there, don’t worry – we cover a number of other incentives that are being issued to coax reluctant citizens into doing what THEY SHOULD DO ANYWAY.

Then, we celebrate the successful unionization of Collectivo Coffee, the effort to do so first referenced here on TMI on the March 19th episode with Faiz Shakir. They are the first coffee chain to do so, and we lay out the significance.

TMI 03/05/2021 – Trump Fractures the GOP, Neera Tanden Faces Consequences, Volvo and Others All-Electric in 2030, and the Defeat of the Flu

Donald Trump is out of office, no matter what Q Anon wants to claim, but his influence over the GOP remains strong… though not strong enough to have it entirely under his thumb. The tension is tearing the once-might GOP apart, and we discuss how.

Then, Neera Tanden, vocal opponent of the GOP and vicious enemy of the progressive movement in the USA is facing consequences for making very few friends outside of centrist President Joe Biden, her nominator. Next, we talk about how the auto industry is finally seeing the end of the line for the internal combustion engine, with companies like Volvo leading the… well, charge forward. Finally, thanks in no small part to how we’ve been social distancing and masking up to avoid COVID-19, it seems the 2020-2021 flu season was vanquished.
