On this episode of TMI, we explore one of the fundamental misunderstandings about health care in the USA: that the bills we receive are the ACTUAL cost of the care. Going through a number of examples, we see that what is being billed is often ten times the cost OR MORE. Because of this deceptive pricing, many people are genuinely concerned when universal coverage comes up and they ask “HOW will it get paid for”? Taking out the need to profit shrinks the pricing to affordable size.

Next, GOP officials throughout the country are responding to the reality that mass deportations and trade war tariffs would ruin their local businesses, and have begun to push back to stave off disaster for their constituents. Then, we look at the nominee who has flown completely under the media radar who spells BIG trouble for civil rights in the USA: Harmeet Dhillon. Dhillon’s anti-trans litigation history and many other issues make her distinctly abhorrent to hold the office in charge of upholding the civil rights of Americans.

Finally, in what is admittedly a bit of schadenfreude, we look at how the proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons not only failed, but was so spectacularly demolished that Albertsons is suing Kroger over it. On TMI for Friday, 9/20/2024, Greg Palast tells us how his investigations team has busted the most brazen, racist attack on voting rights yet. We’re introduced to a terrible new threat to the right to vote: “Vigilante” challenges by self-appointed vote-fraud hunters – not government officials – who are targeting well over ONE MILLION young voters and voters of color to block the counting of their ballots. They tested the operation out last time in Georgia. The Trump-sponsored group “True the Vote” has gone from 88 vote-challenging vigilantes in 2020 to over 40,000 “volunteers” for 2024 in 43 states! Then, when you think about Pixar and the wonderful library of entertainment they have created, you don’t often stop to wonder how their workers – animators and such – have fared. In the case of Inside Out 2 – still at theaters and the top-grossing animated film of all time – these folks were not just worked to death in creating so much money for Disney, many of them were let go just before they would have gotten the profit sharing bonuses that would have compensated for the low wages their unionless studio signs them on for. We then compare that with how the annual budget bills in Congress are being poisoned by GOP House members against taking action to fix the Climate Crisis.

Then we take a look at a new study of food waste reduction – not just the immediate impact that it would have on lowering the amount of food needed to feed people the way we are now, but also the rebound effect from there being more supply in the food chain. Finally, we go over how a focus on recycling (versus redcing and reusing) is not even remotely the best way to go about things.
